Every iron baluster we install meets current residential building code requirements. The standard most homeowners need to know: no gap between balusters may allow a 4-inch sphere to pass through. This is the widely adopted rule in Texas and most jurisdictions, and it exists specifically to prevent young children from getting trapped or falling between spindles.
On a retrofit or replacement job, we re-space your balusters to this standard if the existing spacing was too wide. On new installations, we design to this spec from the start. Other code requirements we address on every baluster project:
- Baluster height: Guardrail and baluster height must meet minimums depending on whether the application is a staircase (34-38 inches above nosing) or an open balcony (typically 36-42 inches). We confirm the right height for your specific situation.
- Bottom clearance: On stairs, the open triangle at the bottom of each baluster must not allow a 6-inch sphere to pass through. We account for this in every stair baluster layout.
- Structural integrity: Guardrails must withstand a 200-pound concentrated load. Solid iron balusters welded in place exceed this requirement comfortably. We never use surface-mount adhesive anchors on structural guardrails.
